remarks: This male smooth otter was seen sunning itself and
rubbing mud off its fur coat. He was about 4 to 5 ft from head
to tail and pretty heavy I imagine.
I have seen otters in the North of Ubin as well as on the East.
I seldom go to the West, but I can imagine you would be able to
find them there as well - if you are lucky. Better to go on a
week day as there would be a lot less people around. At one time,
I saw a pair of them swimming up river during the high tide, in
the north, but didnt get a good shot of them as they spotted me
and dived under immediately. Boy, they sure can move fast in the
water!
adelle replied: The next time anyone spot anything interesting,
just go to the NParks Information Kiosk near the jetty at the
end of your trip to write your sightings on the NParks sightings
record book. Someone apparently saw buffalo in OBS side months
ago!
sivasothi replied: Great photos, very diagnostic of the
Smooth Otter. There are reports of the Small-clawed otter in Ubin
and Tekong from recent years.
mphil shares more photos! After looking at my old photos
of the otters, I found that I had indeed photographed a family
of 4 Oriental small-clawed otters last year. I met them not once
but 2 Sundays in a row at the same place and was able to take
more than a few shots. They look different from the smooth otter
not only in appearance but also in size. I also checked with another
person who has verified their identity. I havent seen these otters
around since then and dunno where they have disappeared to. Boy,
Ubin is full of surprises! (Links to his delightful Oriental Small-clawed
Otters are on the focus
ubin forum thread on the otters).
