bird brains on ubin

Grant shares the adventures of those who went on the Bird Watching trip on 12 Dec 04 on Ubin.

hornbill!
Ubin is the only place in Singapore
where hornbills are commonly seen.

Those of you have missed the Sunday bird walk conducted by Andrew Tay really missed out on a really great time.

Andrew of Nature Society (Singapore) is a good friend of the Green Volunteers Network (GVN) and his knowledge on birds is simply amazing and he had many interesting anecdotes.

In spite of the dark and gloomy weather (with intermittent drizzles) we managed to spot about 20 species of birds including the migratory little egret from North Asia and a couple of rare Spotted Wood Owls (they are nocturnal).

It was so interesting and fun that those attending decided to form an informal bird watching group to learn more about these beautiful creatures that add colour and melodious sounds to Pulau Ubin. They have it decided on a name "The Bird Brains".

For a beginner like me it was an eye-opener and a totally new experience when I realised how rich ubin's birdlife is.

We are planning regular bird walks (to various places).

Andrew has obliged our request to give an introductory talk to would be bird-watchers on December 23rd Thursday at 7.00 pm at the GVN office. If you want to attend please email me, as space is restricted bookings on a first come basis.

If you have books on birds or binoculars etc you could bring it along to get Andrew's comments.
